King Norodom Sihamoni Donates Two Royal Residences to Cambodia as National Museums and Heritage Sites
In a significant gesture of national pride and cultural preservation, His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni has donated two of his royal residences in Phnom Penh to the Royal Government of Cambodia. The donation, which will transform the properties into national museums and heritage sites, is a symbol of the King’s commitment to preserving the nation’s rich history for future generations.
According to a royal letter obtained by Khmer Times on the evening of 8 November, King Sihamoni expressed his deep joy and personal intention to gift the two properties to the Cambodian government for the purposes of national preservation. The letter was addressed to Senate President Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet, who also serve as the President of the Supreme Privy Council to the King.

A Gift of Historical Significance
The two royal residences, both located in the heart of Phnom Penh’s Village 3, Chakto Mukh Commune, Daun Penh District, hold immense historical significance. The first residence, the Royal Southern Residence (known as Teak Sina), spans 2,843 square metres and is registered under land title number 12020703-0245, dated 17 December 2024. This property is of particular importance as it was the birthplace of King Norodom Sihanouk, Cambodia’s revered former monarch and the Father of the Nation.
In his letter, King Sihamoni outlined that the Royal Southern Residence should be maintained, renovated, and arranged as a national museum and heritage property to honor the lasting legacy of his father, King Norodom Sihanouk. The King expressed his desire for the residence to serve as a symbol of respect and remembrance for the late King Father, whose contributions to Cambodia’s independence and identity are still felt today.
A Legacy for the Future
The second residence, the Royal Northern Residence (known as Pokul), is slightly larger, covering 3,539 square metres. This property is registered under land title number 12020703-0151, also dated 17 December 2024. In his letter, King Sihamoni made it clear that, upon his passing, this residence would also be handed over to the Royal Government of Cambodia to be preserved as a national museum and heritage site. His Majesty expressed that this residence would serve as a lasting monument to his own legacy to the Cambodian people.
“I am delighted to bestow these two royal residences to the Royal Government of Cambodia to be arranged as national museums and to be preserved as national heritage for future generations,” King Sihamoni wrote in his heartfelt message.
A Vision for Cultural Preservation
The donation of these two royal residences is not only a symbolic gesture of the King’s legacy but also an act of cultural stewardship. Transforming these properties into national museums and heritage sites will allow future generations of Cambodians, as well as international visitors, to learn about the history and cultural significance of the royal family and Cambodia’s path to independence and self-determination.
The decision to donate these residences comes as part of a broader effort by King Sihamoni to preserve the nation’s historical and cultural heritage. By ensuring these properties remain in the hands of the Cambodian people, His Majesty has taken an important step toward safeguarding Cambodia’s royal history for posterity.
Looking Ahead
The transformation of these royal residences into national treasures marks a milestone in Cambodia’s ongoing journey to celebrate its rich cultural heritage. As the King’s donation moves forward, it is expected to draw both national and international attention, with plans for preservation, renovation, and eventual public access set to take shape in the coming years.
King Sihamoni’s gracious donation serves as both a testament to his own leadership and a reminder of the important role that the Cambodian monarchy continues to play in shaping the nation’s identity. The royal residences will stand as enduring symbols of Cambodia’s history, offering future generations a glimpse into the life and legacy of one of the nation’s most revered royal figures.
