Malaysia reaffirms support for Cambodia–Thailand peace agreement

When talks between Kingdom of Cambodia and Kingdom of Thailand culminated in the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration on 26 October 2025, the government of Malaysia immediately pledged to support its full implementation.

At a press briefing, Malaysia’s Chief of Defence Forces, Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, said Kuala Lumpur would remain fully committed to facilitating the peace process — including coordinating with ASEAN partners and helping to deploy the monitoring and verification mechanisms agreed under the Declaration.

The Declaration itself lays out a roadmap for restoring stability along the shared border: a ceasefire, withdrawal of heavy weapons, humanitarian de-mining, de-escalation of troop deployments, and confidence-building measures monitored by an ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) comprising personnel from ASEAN member states.

Despite recent turbulence — including a border landmine explosion that injured Thai soldiers, prompting Thailand to suspend parts of the agreement — Malaysia says the broader peace process must not be derailed.

For Kuala Lumpur, ensuring long-term peace between Cambodia and Thailand remains a priority for regional stability, and the country will spare no effort in reviving dialogue and backing diplomatic mechanisms to de-escalate tensions
