BREAKING: Cambodia Says Thai Military Fired Throughout the Night, Killing Two Civilians in Military Region 5

Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defense on Monday morning reported a serious escalation along the Cambodia–Thailand border, claiming that the Thai military carried out sustained overnight firing that resulted in the deaths of two Cambodian civilians.

In its official update issued at 07:22 a.m., the ministry said the alleged attack occurred inside Military Region 5, an area that covers parts of Banteay Meanchey province.

Continuous Overnight Firing Reported

According to the statement, the Thai military began firing shortly before 1 a.m. at 12:59 a.m. on December 9. Cambodia alleges that the attack grew more intense as the night progressed and targeted locations near Thma Puok district.

The ministry said the shelling lasted “almost the entire night,” creating fear among residents living near the border and prompting an immediate military assessment by Cambodian regional commanders.

Two Civilians Killed on National Road 56

Authorities confirmed that two civilians traveling on National Road 56 were killed when an artillery round allegedly fired from the Thai side exploded near their vehicle.
Local officials reported that both victims died instantly from the blast. Their identities were not immediately released.

Emergency personnel were deployed to the scene, but the ministry said there was no possibility of saving the victims given the severity of the explosion.

Cambodia Reaffirms Peaceful Approach but Vows to Protect Its Territory

The Ministry of National Defense stressed that Cambodia remains committed to peaceful conflict resolution in accordance with international law. However, it also emphasized that the country is prepared to defend its sovereignty if provoked.

“The Ministry of National Defense and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces strictly uphold the decisions of the Royal Government in resolving issues peacefully and in line with international law,” the statement read.
“At the same time, we are fully prepared to protect our sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety of the Cambodian people. No nation will be permitted to carry out illegal aggression on our territory under any circumstances.”

Situation Under Monitoring

Officials said military units in the region remain on alert while authorities gather further information about the incident. Local residents have been advised to remain cautious while investigations continue.

As of this report, Thai authorities have not issued a public response to the allegations.
