Phil Johnston to Direct ‘The Twits’

Netflix has announced that Phil Johnston, renowned for co-directing Ralph Breaks the Internet, will helm an animated adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Twits. This marks the streaming giant’s inaugural animated Roald Dahl feature since acquiring the Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021.

A Darkly Humorous Adaptation

The Twits introduces audiences to Mr. and Mrs. Twit, a vile couple who own the grotesque amusement park, Twitlandia. The story unfolds as two brave orphans and a family of magical animals devise a plan to outwit the Twits and save their town. Johnston, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Meg Favreau, describes the project as a “strange baby” that blends dark humor with heartfelt moments.

Bringing the Twits to Life

The animation is being produced by U.K.-based Jellyfish Pictures, known for Spirit Untamed. Johnston is joined by co-directors Katie Shanahan (Centaurworld) and Todd Demong (The Addams Family). The film is set to premiere in 2025, offering a fresh take on Dahl’s beloved tale.
