Six Hostages Expected in First Release Under Gaza Exchange Deal

Under a temporary ceasefire agreement, Israel and Hamas are preparing for the first release of hostages from Gaza. According to Hebrew media reports, six Israeli captives will lead the exchange, kicking off a process that will see more released in stages.

Who Are the Six Hostages?

The six individuals reportedly to be freed first include:

  • Matan Angrest
  • Brothers Gali and Ziv Berman
  • Alon Ohel
  • Eitan Mor
  • Omri Miran

Their families have already been notified of the planned transfer.

Phased Release: More to Come

Beyond the first six, another 14 living hostages are slated for release later in the morning, drawn from different parts of Gaza. The staggered approach aims to reduce risk and coordinate the logistics of safely transferring captives.

Role of the Red Cross and IDF

A Red Cross convoy is being dispatched to receive the first group of hostages, under IDF supervision. However, reports have also emerged of vehicles moving in Gaza that are not involved in the handover, adding uncertainty to the process.

Political Backdrop & International Pressure

As the release begins, tensions remain high. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been writing personal notes to the soon-to-be freed hostages. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has described the deal as possibly “the biggest thing I’ve ever done,” emphasizing U.S. efforts to ensure the agreement holds.

Challenges & Risks

  • Security concerns: Moving hostages out of Gaza under ceasefire conditions is fraught with risk.
  • Verification of released persons: Ensuring that the exchange involves live hostages, and not retrieval of deceased remains, will be critical.
  • Trust and compliance: Both sides must show strict adherence to the deal, or risk collapse of the entire exchange.
