Zirkzee on Roma’s Radar as Gasperini Targets January Striker Solution
AS Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini is reportedly pushing to secure a January loan deal for Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee, as the Giallorossi seek to bolster their attacking options in the winter transfer window.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma are closely monitoring the 23-year-old forward, who has found limited playing time at Manchester United this season. Zirkzee’s unsettled status at Old Trafford has prompted interest from multiple clubs across Europe, but Roma appear to be leading the race — for now.
A Familiar Face in Serie A

Zirkzee previously enjoyed his most productive spell in Italy with Bologna during the 2023–24 season, scoring 12 goals and becoming a key figure in their top-six finish. That success has made Serie A an appealing destination for the striker, particularly as he weighs up options to secure regular minutes ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Zirkzee is reportedly growing anxious about losing his place in the Netherlands squad, and with limited opportunities under Erik ten Hag, a mid-season move could be vital for his international ambitions.
Roma’s Striker Concerns
Gasperini, who took over at Roma this summer, has yet to be fully convinced by current striker Artem Dovbyk, who was nearly sold during the last transfer window. Meanwhile, summer signing Leon Bailey has yet to make a single appearance due to a lingering injury, further straining Roma’s depth up front.
With Financial Fair Play restrictions limiting Roma’s ability to spend, the club is expected to pursue a loan-only deal for Zirkzee, a move that would align with both the club’s tactical needs and financial reality.
“Roma need depth and versatility in the final third. Zirkzee offers both — and knows Serie A well,” a source close to the negotiations told La Gazzetta.
Competition in the Market
Despite Roma’s strong interest, they may not have a clear path to Zirkzee. One surprising contender is Como, the ambitious Serie A side backed by significant financial resources. While not competing in Europe, Como are eager to make a statement signing in January, and Zirkzee’s availability presents an ideal opportunity.
With Manchester United open to discussions — particularly if they reinforce their forward line in January — Zirkzee’s short-term future is likely to be resolved swiftly.
The striker is said to favor a return to Italy, but whether Roma can outmaneuver financially stronger clubs remains to be seen.
