Hunter Hess Responds to Trump’s ‘Loser’ Remark With Defiant Gesture at Milan Cortina

Livigno, Italy — Hunter Hess responded to criticism from Donald Trump with a pointed gesture Friday at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

After finishing his men’s halfpipe qualifying run, Hess raised his hand to his forehead, forming an “L” with his fingers.

“Apparently, I’m a loser,” he said afterward, referencing Trump’s social media post that labeled him a “real loser” over earlier remarks about having “mixed emotions” representing the United States.

Hess had previously said he competes for his friends, family and the values he believes reflect the best of the country, clarifying that wearing the flag does not mean endorsing everything happening politically.

On Friday, he reiterated his pride.

“I worked so hard to be here,” Hess said. “I love the United States of America. I’m so happy to represent Team USA.”

Hess advanced to the 12-man halfpipe final, keeping his Olympic focus on the snow — even as the political spotlight followed.
