Ruben Amorim Closes Door on Man Utd January Exits – But Maguire Suggests Farewell Is Near

22 October 2025

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has poured cold water on mounting transfer speculation, firmly declaring that key squad members Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee will not be leaving Old Trafford during the upcoming January window.

But while Amorim looks to consolidate his young squad mid-season, there is growing uncertainty over the future of Harry Maguire, who has publicly admitted that he may be entering his final months as a Manchester United player.

Amorim Stamps Authority on Mid-Season Transfers

Amidst swirling rumours linking Mainoo and Zirkzee with moves to Italy, Amorim made it clear that no major outgoings are expected this winter.

“I understand that [players want to leave], but they are our players and we need everyone to have a good season,” Amorim said in a firm statement to the press.

The Portuguese tactician, appointed in the summer, acknowledged the noise around his squad but emphasized the importance of unity and depth—especially with a demanding fixture calendar and key tournaments looming.

“At this club, everything becomes noise. Players want to play, there’s a World Cup, agents talk—but we have a job to do,” he added.

Mainoo Frustrated by Lack of Minutes

Kobbie Mainoo, once considered the midfield future of England after starting in the Euro 2024 final, has since seen his international prospects dim due to limited game time. The 20-year-old has not started a Premier League match since May, leading to interest from Napoli, who are reportedly monitoring his situation ahead of the January window.

Despite Amorim’s insistence that Mainoo is part of his plans, the player is understood to be frustrated with his current role. Sources suggest that if his situation doesn’t improve by December, he may push for a temporary or permanent move in January.

Zirkzee Drawing Italian Attention

Fellow squad member Joshua Zirkzee, a former Bologna forward, has also been linked with a Serie A return, with AS Roma and newly-promoted Como 1907 named as potential suitors. Closer to home, West Ham United are rumoured to be keeping tabs on the Dutchman as they seek to bolster their attacking options.

Although Zirkzee has shown flashes of quality, he remains on the fringes of Amorim’s starting XI. Still, the manager appears intent on keeping him around—at least until the summer.

Maguire Drops Exit Hint After Anfield Heroics

While Amorim works to preserve squad stability, Harry Maguire has opened the door to a potential summer departure following an emotional reflection after United’s dramatic 2-1 win over Liverpool.

“I’m in my last year now, so this could be the last time I played at Anfield for this club,” Maguire said after scoring the match-winning goal.

The 32-year-old defender, who joined United for £80 million in 2019, has entered the final season of his contract. Discussions regarding an extension are said to be ongoing—but with one major sticking point: wages.

Contract Talks Underway—But With Conditions

According to reports, United have offered Maguire a new deal on reduced terms, reflecting his age and the club’s wage restructuring post-Champions League absence.

Before the squad-wide pay cuts, Maguire reportedly earned £190,000-per-week. Recent reports claim that a new contract offer in the region of £140,000-per-week is on the table—contingent on the player accepting a diminished financial package.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his Here We Go podcast, confirmed that both sides remain in dialogue and that Maguire’s leadership role is still valued within the dressing room.

Summer Exit Blocked by United

Maguire also revealed that United turned down multiple approaches for him during the recent summer transfer window, despite public knowledge of West Ham’s £30 million bid.

“The club made it clear I couldn’t leave on any terms,” Maguire said. “I have my own thoughts about my future, but this is an amazing club. You’d be silly to leave without thinking twice.”

The player chose to stay and fight for his place—something he has arguably done successfully, returning to form and fitness under Amorim’s system. However, the writing may be on the wall as the summer approaches.

January Will Be Quiet—But Summer Promises Change

For now, Ruben Amorim appears determined to avoid any major disruptions mid-season. But as contracts run down and fringe players seek regular minutes elsewhere, the summer of 2026 is shaping up to be a turning point for several Manchester United stars.

Whether Mainoo reclaims his place, Zirkzee earns more time, or Maguire signs on for one last dance, the decisions made over the next few months could define the next era of United’s evolution under Amorim.
