President Donald Trump has commenced his first Asia tour since his re-election, beginning with a visit to the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This marks his second attendance at the regional summit, following a notable absence in previous years.

The summit, held from October 26 to 28, brings together leaders from Southeast Asia and key global partners. In addition to Trump, other prominent figures include Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Notably absent are Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping, whom Trump is scheduled to meet separately in South Korea.

A central focus of the summit is addressing the economic challenges posed by U.S. trade policies. President Trump has threatened to impose tariffs up to 155% on Chinese imports if a trade agreement is not reached by November 1. This has raised concerns among ASEAN nations, many of which are heavily reliant on trade. In response, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized the need for ASEAN to strengthen internal economic ties and reduce dependence on external powers.

A significant diplomatic achievement during the summit is the formalization of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, known as the Kuala Lumpur Accord. The agreement aims to resolve a longstanding border dispute that escalated into conflict earlier this year. President Trump is set to oversee the signing ceremony, underscoring his administration’s role in facilitating international peace efforts.

Looking ahead, President Trump is scheduled to travel to Japan and South Korea as part of his Asia tour. In South Korea, he will meet with President Lee Jae Myung and deliver a keynote address at the APEC CEO luncheon. Discussions are expected to cover trade relations, technology, and regional security issues.
