Philippines Ready to Mediate Cambodia-Thailand Border Conflict as ASEAN Chair in 2026

The Philippines has confirmed it is ready to mediate the ongoing conflict between Cambodia and Thailand once it assumes the ASEAN Chairmanship in January 2026. The move comes as tensions between the two countries remain high despite a recent peace agreement.

Philippines Steps In as a Mediator

After the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on December 22, 2025, Foreign Minister Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro said the Philippines is prepared to help. “If Cambodia and Thailand request our assistance, we are ready to step in as a mediator,” Lazaro stated. The Philippines has expressed its willingness to support both nations in resolving the dispute.

Border Clashes Continue

The conflict between Cambodia and Thailand flared up again in early December 2025, following an airstrike by Thailand along their disputed border. These renewed clashes come despite the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, signed in October 2025, which was meant to reduce tensions.

As of December 23, more than 544,000 people have been forced to leave their homes. The violence has led to the deaths of 21 Cambodian civilians and 83 injuries. Despite calls for a ceasefire, the violence continues to affect both nations.

ASEAN’s Efforts to Secure Peace

The Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur aimed to address the situation. However, the meeting did not result in a successful ceasefire agreement. As a result, Cambodia and Thailand will meet on December 24 to discuss the ceasefire’s implementation and verification.

Philippines Takes on ASEAN Chair in 2026

When the Philippines takes over the ASEAN Chair in 2026, it will have a significant role in guiding the region toward peace. As a neutral party, the Philippines has the opportunity to bridge the gap between the two nations and help enforce the peace agreement.

ASEAN’s involvement in the conflict is critical. The Philippines has long been committed to peace efforts in the region and has experience in facilitating dialogue. The country’s involvement as a mediator may provide a path forward for both Cambodia and Thailand.

The Road Ahead: Can Peace Be Achieved?

The future of peace between Cambodia and Thailand is uncertain. The General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, scheduled for December 24, is a critical step. Both countries will discuss how to implement the ceasefire and prevent further violence.

As ASEAN Chair, the Philippines will be a key player in helping to restore peace. The country’s leadership will be tested in the coming months as both Cambodia and Thailand try to find a way forward.
