Drama in China: Top General Investigated Over Alleged Nuclear Secrets Leak

China has opened an investigation into Zhang Youxia, one of the country’s most senior military leaders. The case follows reports alleging he leaked sensitive information about China’s nuclear weapons programme to the United States.

Authorities announced on Sunday that Zhang is suspected of violating state law and Communist Party discipline. However, officials did not provide further details about the allegations.

Shortly after the announcement, The Wall Street Journal reported that Zhang is suspected of passing “technical information” related to China’s nuclear capabilities to Washington. The report cited people familiar with a high-level military security briefing.

Zhang, 75, serves as vice chairman of the Central Military Commission. The body is the highest command authority of the People’s Liberation Army and is chaired by President Xi Jinping. Zhang has long been viewed as one of Xi’s closest allies.

In addition, the report alleged that Zhang accepted bribes in exchange for promoting officers within China’s defence procurement system. That system oversees weapons research, development and military acquisitions.

Investigators are also examining Zhang’s role in the promotion of former defence minister Li Shangfu. Li was removed from office in 2023 and later expelled from the Communist Party on corruption charges.

Meanwhile, the case is reportedly linked to a separate investigation into a former executive at China National Nuclear Corp. Authorities believe evidence from that probe pointed to a possible security breach within China’s nuclear sector.

China’s embassy in Washington did not address the specific allegations. A spokesperson said the investigation shows the leadership’s firm commitment to fighting corruption.

The probe marks the most serious development yet in an ongoing purge of China’s military leadership. Analysts say it highlights growing concerns over loyalty and discipline at the highest levels of the armed forces.
