Jarrell Miller’s Hairpiece Flies Off During Madison Square Garden Fight

Jarrell Miller earned a split-decision victory over Kingsley Ibeh at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, but the heavyweight bout will be remembered less for the scorecards and more for a moment that left fans and commentators stunned.

Late in the second round, a flurry of punches from Ibeh snapped Miller’s head backward, dislodging the American fighter’s toupee and briefly halting the rhythm of the contest. Within seconds, Miller removed the hairpiece completely and tossed it into the crowd, turning the undercard fight into an instant viral moment.

Commentator Chris Mannix summed up the surreal scene on DAZN: “I’ve seen a lot in boxing, but I’ve never seen that.”

A moment that stole the spotlight

The fight took place on the undercard of the high-profile title bout between Shakur Stevenson and Teofimo Lopez, but Miller’s unexpected wardrobe malfunction quickly became the talking point of the night.

As the hairpiece lifted and shifted under pressure, Miller continued fighting before theatrically removing it, briefly celebrating as if he had already secured victory. Moments later, he refocused and resumed the bout, ultimately earning a narrow split-decision win.

Social media reaction was immediate. Fellow boxer Fabio Wardley posted a video of the toupee resting on the seat beside him, joking, “Don’t worry, I’ll keep it safe.” Featherweight champion Skye Nicolson also joined in, posing with the hairpiece placed atop her head.

Miller explains what happened

Speaking in a post-fight interview inside the ring, Miller explained that the hairpiece was a last-minute solution following an unexpected problem just days before the fight.

“I get to my mama’s house and I saw some shampoo bottles on the table,” Miller said. “I shampooed and it was like ammonium bleach. I literally lost my hair like two days ago.”

With little time to prepare, Miller said he called his manager in a panic.

“So I called my manager and said, ‘Get me one of those manes,’ and I slapped that on real quick,” he added. “It’s funny, man. I’m a comedian, and you’ve got to make fun of yourself.”

Miller appeared relaxed about the incident afterward, laughing it off and embracing the attention rather than trying to downplay it.

Career context

Now 37, Miller remains one of the most recognizable — and controversial — figures in heavyweight boxing. Once considered a major contender, his career was derailed in 2019 when a planned fight with Anthony Joshua was canceled after Miller failed a drugs test.

The setback sidelined him for several years. He returned to the ring in 2022 but suffered his first professional loss in 2023, when he was stopped by Daniel Dubois. He later fought to a draw with Andy Ruiz Jr., the same fighter who replaced him against Joshua and went on to claim the world title.

Saturday’s victory over Ibeh marked another step in Miller’s attempt to rebuild momentum, even if the spectacle surrounding the fight overshadowed the sporting achievement.

Boxing’s latest viral moment

Unusual incidents are not new to boxing, but Miller’s hairpiece flying into the crowd at Madison Square Garden ranks among the sport’s most unexpected visual moments in recent memory.

For Miller, the episode added an unlikely footnote to a career already filled with dramatic twists. For fans, it provided a reminder that even at one of boxing’s most iconic venues, the sport can still produce moments no scriptwriter could predict.

As one ringside quip suggested on the night, Miller may have won the fight — but he also won something else entirely: a permanent place in boxing folklore.
