2027 U.S. News College Rankings: MIT Takes No. 1

The 2027 U.S. News college rankings have produced a major change at the top of American higher education, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology taking the No. 1 position among national universities and ending Princeton University’s 15-year run at the top.

Princeton moved to No. 2, followed by Harvard University at No. 3 and Yale University at No. 4. Stanford University and the California Institute of Technology tied for No. 5.

The rankings were released Tuesday, marking the 42nd edition of the annual U.S. News Best Colleges report. Nearly 1,700 institutions were evaluated across different categories.

MIT Takes the Top Spot

MIT’s rise to No. 1 is one of the most significant changes in this year’s rankings.

Princeton had held the top position continuously since the 2012 edition. Its move to second place does not necessarily indicate a sudden change in the quality of education at either university.

Instead, much of the movement is connected to changes in the way U.S. News calculates its rankings.

The publication introduced a new Earnings by Major measure that examines graduates’ earnings several years after completing college. The measure uses data from the U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard and evaluates earnings within specific academic fields.

The change puts greater emphasis on measurable outcomes after graduation. U.S. News said the new approach responds to growing concerns among students and families about the cost and long-term value of a college degree.

Earnings Become More Important

The new earnings measure is particularly relevant to universities with strong programs in engineering, computer science, economics and other fields with strong employment outcomes.

MIT performed especially well under the new metric.

The university has long been known for its programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Its undergraduate engineering program retained the No. 1 position, while its computer science and economics programs also ranked first nationally.

MIT’s undergraduate business program ranked No. 2. The university also received the No. 1 ranking for undergraduate research and creative projects and ranked No. 2 among the country’s most innovative schools.

The results give MIT a particularly strong position in the revised ranking system, where student outcomes account for more than half of an institution’s overall score.

Princeton Remains Near the Top

Princeton’s fall to No. 2 marks the end of its lengthy run at the top, but the university remains one of the highest-ranked institutions in the country.

The university also claimed the No. 1 position in U.S. News’ Best Value Schools ranking for national universities.

That distinction highlights an important difference between overall rankings and value rankings. A university can move in the overall list while continuing to perform strongly on measures related to affordability and financial value.

The new methodology also means the 2027 rankings should not be viewed as a direct year-to-year comparison. U.S. News has said significant methodology changes make comparisons with previous editions more difficult.

Harvard, Yale and Stanford Remain in Top Five

Harvard University ranked third nationally, followed by Yale University at No. 4.

Stanford and Caltech tied for fifth, keeping the top group heavily concentrated among major private research universities.

The University of Pennsylvania ranked No. 7, Duke University was No. 8, and Johns Hopkins University and Northwestern University tied at No. 9.

The results show that although the top position changed, the overall makeup of the leading group remains familiar.

Technology-Focused Schools Make Gains

MIT’s move was accompanied by notable gains for several other universities with strong technical programs.

Caltech climbed six positions to No. 5, while Carnegie Mellon University moved six places to No. 14. Stevens Institute of Technology also recorded a substantial rise.

The changes coincide with the increased emphasis on graduate earnings and student outcomes.

However, the ranking movement should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that these universities dramatically changed from one year to the next. Changes in methodology can significantly alter how institutions perform.

Public Universities Also See Changes

The revised rankings produced movement among major public universities as well.

UC Berkeley and UCLA tied at No. 20 with the University of Notre Dame. Other public universities experienced declines in their overall positions.

Rice University, meanwhile, moved up one place to No. 16 and remained the highest-ranked university in Texas.

These results demonstrate the broader impact of the updated methodology across different types of institutions.
