Russia Targets Zaporizhzhia After Ukraine Launches Massive Drone Barrage

Russian drones struck the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia on Monday, September 21, damaging residential buildings and other civilian sites a day after Ukraine launched more than 1,000 drones toward targets inside Russia, according to Ukrainian officials and reports from the Associated Press.

The latest attacks highlight the continuing intensity of the Russia-Ukraine war as both sides increasingly rely on long-range drones to strike military, energy and infrastructure targets. The escalation came as world leaders gathered in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, where the war remains a major international security issue.

More than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, diplomatic efforts have yet to produce a lasting end to the fighting. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to attend the U.N. gathering and meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, while Russian President Vladimir Putin is not scheduled to attend.

Russian Drones Strike Zaporizhzhia

The Russian bombardment of Zaporizhzhia late Sunday struck several locations, including apartment buildings, a university and a shopping mall, according to Zelenskyy. Five people were reported wounded in the attack.

The Ukrainian president also said Russian forces carried out strikes in nine other regions.

In the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine, a Russian drone struck a home, killing a 45-year-old woman and seriously injuring her 13-year-old son, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported.

The attacks came after an extensive Ukrainian drone offensive against Russia over the weekend.

Russian authorities said their air defenses intercepted or destroyed 244 Ukrainian drones overnight across Russian regions and the Black Sea, while Ukraine’s air force reported that it had shot down or suppressed 148 Russian drones during an overnight attack.

The figures could not be independently verified, and Russia and Ukraine regularly issue competing battlefield claims.

Ukraine Launches More Than 1,000 Drones

Ukraine’s large-scale drone operation stretched from Saturday into Sunday, with hundreds of drones reportedly directed toward Moscow and other parts of Russia.

The attacks coincided with the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections, adding another layer of political sensitivity to the strikes.

Ukraine has increasingly used long-range drones to attack Russian military and energy infrastructure far from the front lines. Russian officials have reported damage to oil facilities and other infrastructure following repeated Ukrainian attacks.

The Ukrainian government has argued that Russian energy facilities supporting the war effort are legitimate military-related targets. At the same time, Kyiv continues to face Russian attacks against its own energy infrastructure and civilian areas.

The intensifying drone campaign has also created concerns beyond the immediate battlefields.

Drone Incursions Raise Regional Concerns

Drone activity connected to the war has repeatedly crossed into neighboring countries, creating additional security concerns across Eastern Europe.

Moldova’s Defense Ministry said Monday that part of the country’s northern airspace was temporarily closed after surveillance systems detected an aerial object entering Moldovan territory shortly after midnight.

Authorities have reported several recent incidents involving drones or drone debris in Moldova. Because electronic warfare can interfere with drone navigation, officials have not always been able to immediately establish whether a particular drone was Russian or Ukrainian.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has repeatedly criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and warned that the conflict is increasingly affecting countries bordering Ukraine.

Romania has also experienced an increase in drone-related incidents involving its airspace.

The developments follow a separate incident in Lithuania earlier in September involving a drone that authorities said most probably originated from Russia. A NATO-deployed Italian fighter jet shot down the drone after it entered Lithuanian airspace, according to Reuters.

Such incidents have increased concern among European governments that the war could produce unintended security consequences outside Ukraine.

Zelenskyy Calls for Pressure Toward Peace

Zelenskyy said Russia’s continued attacks showed that Moscow was not reducing its military campaign.

He has said Ukraine intends to use the U.N. General Assembly to discuss possible international efforts toward peace and security.

Zelenskyy also reiterated Kyiv’s position that attacks against Ukrainian energy facilities, critical infrastructure and food exports must stop. He said Ukraine was prepared to take corresponding de-escalation steps if Russia ended attacks against those sectors.

The diplomatic challenge remains complicated by disagreements over the conditions for ending the war, including security guarantees, territory and the future of Ukraine’s relationship with Western countries.

European governments have continued pressing Russia to end the invasion, while Moscow has shown no indication that it is prepared to abandon its broader objectives in Ukraine.

Trump Raises Concerns Over Russian Fuel Supplies

The latest escalation also comes amid growing international concern about the effects of attacks on Russia’s oil-refining industry.

U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized Ukrainian strikes against Russian refineries, arguing that the attacks have contributed to pressure on global fuel supplies.

Trump previously urged Zelenskyy to stop targeting Russian diesel infrastructure. Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries have reduced some fuel production and contributed to gasoline shortages inside Russia, according to Reuters reporting.

Trump has also been critical of the continuation of the war and is expected to meet Zelenskyy during the U.N. General Assembly in New York.

The meeting could provide another opportunity to discuss diplomatic options, although the continuing exchange of drone attacks illustrates the distance between battlefield developments and negotiations.

War Continues as U.N. Leaders Gather

The latest Russian and Ukrainian drone attacks demonstrate how the war has evolved into an increasingly intensive long-range aerial conflict.
