iPhone 18 Pro Launch Begins New Apple CEO Era
The iPhone 18 Pro launch has given Apple’s new chief executive, John Ternus, an early opportunity to put his mark on the company. The September 2026 event was Ternus’ first major iPhone presentation as Apple CEO after he officially succeeded Tim Cook on September 1.

The timing makes the launch particularly significant. Apple is entering a new leadership era while simultaneously introducing several major products, including the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the company’s first foldable iPhone.
For Ternus, however, the iPhone launch is only the beginning of what could be an unusually busy period for Apple’s new leadership.
iPhone 18 Pro Launch Highlights New Hardware
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, with the phones reaching stores on September 18.
The new Pro models focus on several areas that Apple says matter most to customers: photography, performance, battery life and artificial intelligence.
A major camera change is the new 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. The feature gives users greater control over how much light reaches the camera sensor and expands the options available when taking photographs.
Apple has also introduced the A20 Pro chip and a new vapor chamber designed to improve sustained performance.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max receives an especially notable battery upgrade. Apple says it delivers its largest battery-life increase ever for an iPhone, supported by improvements to the company’s silicon and a larger battery.
The phones also feature a smaller Dynamic Island and run iOS 27, which brings Apple’s latest artificial intelligence features and Siri improvements.
John Ternus Takes Over After Tim Cook
The iPhone 18 Pro launch also represents an important leadership transition at Apple.
Ternus became CEO on September 1, replacing Cook, who moved into the role of executive chairman. Cook had served as Apple’s CEO since 2011 after joining the company in 1998.
His tenure included the expansion of Apple’s major product categories, the growth of its services business and the development of products such as Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro.
Ternus comes to the CEO position with extensive experience inside Apple’s hardware organization.
He joined Apple in 2001 and became vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013. He joined Apple’s executive team as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2021.
His responsibilities have included hardware development across the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch families.
That background makes the transition notable because Ternus has spent much of his career working directly on Apple’s products.
The Foldable iPhone Adds Another Major Chapter
While the iPhone 18 Pro remains central to Apple’s smartphone strategy, another product introduced during Ternus’ first major launch has attracted considerable attention.
Apple unveiled its first foldable iPhone, called iPhone Duo.
The device features a 7.6-inch display and supports Apple Pencil functionality. It also introduces split-screen multitasking, allowing users to work with multiple applications on the larger display.
Starting at $1,999, the foldable is Apple’s most expensive iPhone to date.
The device is expected to become available in October, giving Ternus another major product launch shortly after taking over as CEO.
The foldable also places Apple in a smartphone category that competitors have been developing for years.
A Busy Year Ahead for Apple
The new CEO’s first year could involve more than simply overseeing the latest iPhone generation.
Apple has continued expanding beyond its traditional smartphone business, with products ranging from computers and wearables to services and artificial intelligence.
The company also introduced new Apple Watch and AirPods products alongside the latest iPhones.
That means Ternus begins his tenure with multiple product categories moving forward simultaneously.
His previous experience in hardware could become particularly relevant as Apple works to develop new designs while maintaining the ecosystem that connects its devices.
At the same time, artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important to the company’s software strategy.
The latest iPhone Pro models place Siri AI and Apple Intelligence at the center of the user experience. Apple is emphasizing personal context and privacy as it expands those capabilities.
What the New Era Means for Apple
The iPhone 18 Pro launch does not represent a complete break from Apple’s previous direction. Instead, it shows a company continuing to develop established product lines while introducing new categories.
That balance may define the early part of Ternus’ tenure.
The iPhone remains Apple’s most important consumer product, but the company is also looking toward foldable devices, artificial intelligence and new hardware experiences.
Ternus now has the challenge of managing that transition while maintaining Apple’s existing product ecosystem.
For consumers, the first signs of the new era are already visible.
The iPhone 18 Pro brings a redesigned camera system, faster performance and longer battery life. The foldable iPhone introduces an entirely different form factor. Meanwhile, Apple’s latest software places greater emphasis on artificial intelligence.
The products launched in 2026 therefore offer an early look at the direction Apple is taking under its new CEO.
For Ternus, the September event was only his first major public chapter as Apple’s leader. With more products, software updates and technologies expected across the company’s portfolio, the iPhone 18 Pro launch could ultimately be remembered as the opening event of a much larger transition at Apple.
