Thai Troops Fire on Cambodian Forces at Preah Vihear Border

Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have escalated following an exchange of gunfire at the disputed Preah Vihear border. Thai forces fired on Cambodian military personnel this afternoon, sparking calls for a full investigation into the incident, which could further strain relations between the neighboring nations.

The Cambodian Ministry of National Defence confirmed the attack, which occurred at around 2:15 p.m. local time in the Prolean Thmar area of Chom Khsan District, in Preah Vihear Province. According to Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, the Thai military used a combination of small arms, B40 rocket launchers, and 60mm mortars during the attack.

In a swift response, Cambodian officials immediately contacted their Thai counterparts, urging them to cease the fire. Cambodian forces refrained from returning fire, focusing on de-escalating the situation. By 2:32 p.m., the Thai military reportedly halted the attack, although Cambodian troops continued to maintain heightened vigilance along the border.

Despite the cessation of hostilities, Cambodia’s Ministry moved quickly to involve the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT). Plans are already in motion for an investigation into the attack, with the government emphasizing the importance of ensuring transparency, accountability, and adherence to the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Declaration.

“We are committed to peace and diplomacy,” the Ministry’s statement read. “Cambodia stands firm in opposing any use of force in resolving disputes, advocating instead for peaceful dialogue in line with international law.”

The Preah Vihear region has long been a source of conflict between the two nations. The Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been at the center of a territorial dispute for years, leading to sporadic skirmishes despite the signing of a ceasefire agreement in 2011.

This latest incident has raised concerns about the stability of the region and the potential for further clashes. Both nations will be watching closely as the ASEAN Observer Team prepares to investigate the incident, with hopes that this will help prevent future conflict and bring about a diplomatic resolution.

Cambodia’s Commitment to Peace

Following the firing incident, Cambodia reaffirmed its commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts, emphasizing the country’s adherence to international agreements. “We believe in the power of diplomacy and will continue to work with our neighbors and international partners to uphold peace and security,” said a government spokesperson.

As of now, Cambodian forces remain on high alert, ensuring that any future threats are quickly addressed without escalation. The government has called for both sides to honor their commitments to the ceasefire and to engage in dialogue to ensure a long-lasting peace along the border.

The Preah Vihear border area, which has witnessed multiple clashes over the years, remains a focal point of international attention. The involvement of the ASEAN Observer Team could play a pivotal role in defusing tensions and preventing future flare-ups. Cambodia’s efforts to keep the peace, while remaining vigilant, reflect its broader commitment to regional stability and international cooperation.
