Heisman Odds Shift After Explosive Week 1

The Heisman odds market has changed dramatically after an explosive opening week of the 2026 college football season, with Miami quarterback Darian Mensah emerging as the new favorite while several other contenders saw their prices move.

Week 1 produced huge offensive numbers across the country. However, ESPN betting analyst Pamela Maldonado argues that bettors should be careful about treating one spectacular Saturday as proof of a full-season Heisman résumé.

The biggest question now is simple: Which performances are sustainable, and which were simply Week 1 noise?

That distinction could become extremely important as the 2026 Heisman race develops

Heisman Odds Put Darian Mensah On Top

Miami quarterback Darian Mensah made the biggest early statement.

Mensah threw for 401 yards and five touchdowns in Miami’s 45-6 victory over Stanford. His performance was enough to push him to the top of the Heisman betting board at +550, according to the ESPN report.

The statistics were impressive. More importantly, however, some of the underlying numbers supported the idea that Mensah’s performance was not simply the product of an easy opponent.

ESPN noted that Mensah was highly effective on intermediate throws and against Stanford’s pressure packages. He also produced three touchdowns on six deep attempts and completed all eight of his passes when Stanford blitzed. EESPN

Those details matter because Heisman futures are based on what a player might accomplish over an entire season.

A quarterback who dominates because of repeatable skills has a much stronger case than one who simply accumulates numbers against an overmatched defense.

Still, there is a problem with Mensah’s new price.

At +550, bettors are being asked to pay a significant premium after only one game.

Malachi Toney Creates A Major Heisman Problem

Miami’s success also created an unusual situation for Mensah.

Wide receiver Malachi Toney was arguably just as spectacular.

Toney recorded 234 receiving yards, breaking Miami’s 42-year-old single-game receiving record. He accomplished the feat in less than three quarters, adding another major storyline to an already dominant Miami performance. EESPN

That creates an important question for Heisman voters.

If Miami continues to produce massive offensive numbers, will the national narrative belong to Mensah or Toney?

The answer could have a major impact on both players’ futures.

Toney’s +1250 price makes him one of the more prominent non-quarterback candidates. Yet history makes that route more difficult.

Quarterbacks have dominated the Heisman conversation for decades. ESPN pointed out that only two-and-a-half receivers have won the award since 1991: Desmond Howard, DeVonta Smith and two-way standout Travis Hunter. EESPN

That does not make Toney a bad candidate.

It simply means his path is narrower.

He needs continued elite production while also benefiting from a situation in which there is no overwhelming quarterback favorite.

Arch Manning Remains A Major Contender

Texas quarterback Arch Manning also strengthened his Heisman case during Week 1.

Manning showed his ability as a deep passer, completing all three of his deep attempts for 110 yards. The performance provided another positive sign for a quarterback who entered the season under enormous expectations. EESPN

His Heisman odds stood at +950 following the opening weekend.

However, there remains an important unanswered question.

How will Manning perform when defenses consistently pressure him?

Texas State pressured Manning on only four dropbacks in the opener. That means Week 1 did not provide a meaningful test of one of the biggest concerns surrounding his game entering the season.

Therefore, Manning’s performance should be viewed as confirmation of his talent rather than definitive evidence that every preseason concern has disappeared.

The upcoming schedule should provide much better answers.

Jeremiah Smith Still Has A Strong Case

Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith remains one of the most intriguing players in the Heisman race.

Smith entered the season with enormous expectations, and his talent has never been the major question.

The bigger issue is competition within his own offense.

Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin also looked extremely efficient during the team’s 56-3 victory over Ball State. The Buckeyes produced 671 total yards, including 434 passing yards and 237 rushing yards. EESPN

If Ohio State continues winning comfortably, Sayin could receive much of the credit for the offense’s success.

That could make it harder for Smith to build a dominant Heisman narrative.

For a receiver to win the award, individual production usually needs to become impossible to ignore.

Smith certainly has the ability.

The question is whether his numbers will separate him from Sayin and the other elite quarterbacks.

Trinidad Chambliss Is The Value Pick

Among the players discussed after Week 1, Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss may have the most interesting combination of price and opportunity.

Chambliss remained at +1300 despite producing nearly 400 total yards and four touchdowns against ranked Louisville. His performance included 190 yards and three touchdowns on deep throws. EESPN

That is significant because his production came against a ranked opponent rather than a lower-level team.

There were negatives, too.

Chambliss committed two turnovers, which likely helped explain why the betting market did not immediately shorten his odds.

Nevertheless, ESPN’s Maldonado believes the performance provided exactly the type of evidence that supports the preseason case for Chambliss.

The bigger attraction is his remaining schedule.

Chambliss Has The Schedule He Needs

A Heisman candidate needs more than impressive statistics.

He needs opportunities to create memorable moments against elite opponents.

Chambliss has several of them.

Ole Miss is scheduled to face LSU and Georgia at home, while also traveling to Texas and Oklahoma. EESPN

That gives Chambliss multiple opportunities to build a national profile.

If he performs well against those opponents, his +1300 price could look very different later in the season.

This is one of the strongest arguments behind the Chambliss value play.

His Week 1 performance already provided evidence.

His future schedule provides additional opportunities.

And the betting market has not yet charged him a significantly higher price.

That combination is difficult to ignore.

Sam Leavitt Makes A Big Move

LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt was another major Week 1 mover.

After LSU’s dominant 51-10 victory over Clemson, Leavitt’s Heisman odds shortened from +2200 to +1500. He rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns, adding another dimension to LSU’s offensive attack. EESPN

LSU also delivered one of the most impressive team performances of the opening weekend.

The Tigers outgained Clemson 644-145 without relying on a favorable turnover margin. That makes the result more convincing than many typical Week 1 blowouts. EESPN

However, Leavitt still has something to prove as a passer.

ESPN’s assessment was that his passing performance did not fully justify the size of his odds move. His struggles became more noticeable when he faced pressure.

His mobility is a major asset.

But if Leavitt wants to become a serious Heisman favorite, he will likely need to produce more convincing performances through the air against stronger competition.

Ohio State Is Already Priced Correctly

Ohio State entered Week 1 as the national championship favorite at +550, and the Buckeyes did little to change that position.

Their 56-3 win over Ball State was dominant from start to finish.

The offense produced 671 yards, while the defense limited Ball State to only three points. EESPN

Yet that dominance did not necessarily create betting value.

The reason is straightforward.

Ohio State was already highly regarded before the season began.

Week 1 confirmed the preseason expectations rather than dramatically changing them.

For bettors, confirmation is not always the same thing as value.

A team can look excellent and still be a poor futures bet if the market has already accounted for its strengths.

Penn State Offers A More Complicated Picture

Penn State also opened the season with a shutout, defeating Marshall 45-0.

The result was notable because it marked Penn State’s first shutout in a head coaching debut since 1915. Quarterback Rocco Becht also impressed with his intermediate passing and connection with Koby Howard. EESPN

However, the Nittany Lions averaged only 3.6 yards per carry.

That weakness raises questions about the overall balance of the team.

At 50-1, Penn State theoretically offers considerable upside. But the early evidence does not yet support a strong national championship argument.

The run game, offensive line and pass rush will need to improve before the Nittany Lions can be considered a complete contender.

What The Heisman Odds Really Tell Us

The biggest lesson from Week 1 may be that bettors should not automatically chase the biggest box scores.

College football creates enormous narratives after the first weekend.

A quarterback throws five touchdowns, and suddenly he becomes a national superstar.

A receiver breaks a decades-old record, and his Heisman case becomes a national conversation.

A team destroys a ranked opponent, and its championship odds shorten immediately.

Some of those moves will prove correct.

Others will eventually look like overreactions.

The challenge for futures bettors is identifying which performances contain repeatable qualities.

That means looking beyond touchdowns and yardage.

Can the player succeed against pressure?

Can he make difficult throws against better defenses?

Can his offensive line maintain its advantage?

Can his team remain competitive against elite opponents?

And perhaps most importantly, will he have enough high-profile games to remain part of the national conversation?

Best Heisman Odds Bet After Week 1

According to ESPN’s analysis, Trinidad Chambliss at +1300 represents the most attractive Heisman value after Week 1.

The reasoning is compelling.

Chambliss already produced against ranked competition. He demonstrated explosive passing ability and mobility. Meanwhile, his odds did not move substantially despite the performance. EESPN

That creates a potentially favorable mismatch between performance and price.

Mensah may ultimately prove to be the better player.

Manning could have a spectacular season.

Smith could overwhelm defenses.

Leavitt could develop into LSU’s next major star.

But futures betting is not simply about predicting who will be the best player.

It is about finding the best relationship between probability and price.

At +1300, Chambliss remains attractive because his path to a stronger Heisman résumé is still ahead of him.

The Road Ahead Could Decide The Race

The 2026 Heisman race is far from settled.

Week 1 produced several legitimate contenders, but the most important games have not yet been played.

For Mensah, the challenge will be maintaining his production while sharing the spotlight with Toney.

For Manning, the priority will be proving he can remain effective when defenses create consistent pressure.

For Smith, he must generate enough individual production to stand apart from Sayin.

For Leavitt, the next step is demonstrating that his arm can carry LSU through tougher opponents.

For Chambliss, the mission is different.

He simply needs to keep producing and take advantage of the major games waiting on Ole Miss’ schedule.

That makes the Heisman market particularly interesting heading into the next phase of the season.

Final Verdict On The 2026 Heisman Race

The opening weekend changed the Heisman odds, but it did not settle the award.

Darian Mensah deserves recognition as the new favorite after his spectacular Miami debut. Arch Manning and Jeremiah Smith remain legitimate contenders, while Sam Leavitt made one of the biggest moves of the week.

Yet Trinidad Chambliss stands out from a value perspective.

His performance against Louisville supplied the kind of evidence that futures bettors want to see, while his remaining schedule offers multiple opportunities for signature performances.

At +1300, that makes Chambliss one of the most compelling Heisman bets to monitor after Week 1.

Of course, futures odds can change quickly, and sportsbook prices are subject to change. Bettors should compare current markets, understand the risks involved and check applicable laws and regulations before wagering. EESPN
