BlizzCon 2026 Delivers 7 Major Blizzard Reveals
BlizzCon 2026 returned with a huge wave of announcements that could reshape Blizzard Entertainment’s gaming lineup for years to come.

The opening ceremony in Anaheim, California, delivered surprises across nearly every major Blizzard franchise. StarCraft is returning in an entirely new form, Diablo V has been officially announced, World of Warcraft is expanding in an unexpected direction, and Overwatch is celebrating its 10th anniversary by looking firmly toward the future.
The event also brought new content for Warcraft III: Reforged, Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm, while Blizzard confirmed that a Diablo animated series is in development for Netflix.
For Blizzard fans who have waited years for the company’s biggest franchises to move forward, the message from the opening ceremony was clear: the publisher has plenty planned.
Here are the biggest announcements from BlizzCon 2026.
1. BlizzCon 2026 Confirms StarCraft Is Back
Perhaps the biggest surprise of BlizzCon 2026 was the return of StarCraft.
Blizzard announced that StarCraft will return in 2030 as an original open-world shooter. The announcement represents a dramatic departure from the franchise’s traditional real-time strategy format.
Rather than returning with another conventional strategy game, Blizzard is taking the universe into a new genre and expanding the way players can experience its science-fiction setting.
The announcement is particularly significant because StarCraft has been largely absent from Blizzard’s modern release schedule. The franchise remains one of the company’s most recognizable properties, but fans have spent years waiting for a major new installment.
The 2030 project therefore represents more than another game announcement. It signals Blizzard’s willingness to experiment with one of its most established universes.
The company revealed the project during the opening ceremony with an announcement cinematic titled “Dominion,” immediately putting StarCraft back into the spotlight.
2. Diablo V Is Officially Coming in 2029
Blizzard also confirmed Diablo V, giving fans their first official look at the next mainline chapter of the dark action-RPG series.
The game is scheduled to arrive in spring 2029.
The story will take place after a catastrophic defeat for Sanctuary. Blizzard describes a world where Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has won, creating a dramatically different starting point for the franchise.
That premise gives Diablo V an unusually bleak foundation.
Instead of beginning with another battle to prevent the Lord of Terror from taking control, the next game asks what happens after the heroes have already lost.
That shift could allow Blizzard to explore a darker and more desperate version of Sanctuary.
However, players will have to wait several years before Diablo V arrives. In the meantime, Blizzard is continuing to expand Diablo IV with new content.
3. Diablo IV Gets a Major Anniversary Update
While Diablo V is still years away, Blizzard has not abandoned Diablo IV.
The game’s Season of Hell’s Legacy launches September 15 as part of the franchise’s 30th-anniversary celebration.
The update brings back major elements from Diablo’s history, including the Prime Evils and Deckard Cain. It also introduces Nightmare Rifts, anniversary rewards and equipment inspired by different eras of the franchise.
Blizzard is also preparing another major addition for 2027.
The Amazon will become the next playable Diablo IV class during the first half of 2027. The class uses a javelin and focuses on a different style of combat from Diablo IV’s existing roster.
For current players, these updates provide a bridge between Diablo IV and the eventual arrival of Diablo V.
That approach also gives Blizzard several years to continue developing and expanding Diablo IV while its next major sequel remains in production.
4. World of Warcraft Forever Takes Players Back to the Vanilla Era
World of Warcraft received one of the most intriguing announcements of BlizzCon 2026 with World of Warcraft: Forever.
The new experience will exist alongside Modern World of Warcraft and World of Warcraft Classic.
Forever is set during the Vanilla era, but Blizzard is using that setting to explore parts of Azeroth that players never experienced in the original game.
The project will include three new zones, more than 1,000 new quests, nine new dungeons and two new raids.
Blizzard is also introducing a new playable race called the Skyborne.
The combination of classic-era foundations and entirely new content makes Forever different from a straightforward remake. Instead, it appears designed to create a new path for players who enjoy the original Warcraft atmosphere but want fresh adventures.
The beta begins September 17, while the full release is scheduled for November 4, 2026.
That makes World of Warcraft: Forever one of the most immediate major announcements from the show.
5. Warcraft III: Reforged Gets New Story Content
Blizzard also surprised Warcraft III fans with new story content for Warcraft III: Reforged.
The Forsaken Kingdom campaign returns players to the fall of Lordaeron and the transformation of the region into the Undercity.
The announcement is notable because it marks the first new Warcraft III story in more than two decades.
The campaign arrives alongside the game’s 3.0 update, which includes a substantial graphics overhaul and a revamped World Editor.
The new campaign is available now, giving Warcraft III fans something they can play immediately rather than waiting for a future release.
For players who have followed Warcraft since the original strategy games, the announcement represents an important connection between Blizzard’s classic history and its current plans.
6. Overwatch Introduces Doctrine and New Content
Overwatch is also moving into a new phase.
During BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard celebrated the franchise’s 10th anniversary while introducing its next major content plans.
Season 5 introduces Doctrine, a new Support Hero with a vampire-inspired design. The character uses life-draining abilities and bat-like drones, giving the hero a distinctive identity within the Support roster.
Doctrine is not the only major change.
Blizzard is also reworking Sombra and Roadhog while introducing a new map called Watchpoint: Grimsvotn.
The season will also conclude The Reign of Talon, described as the first year-long story arc in Overwatch history.
The next Overwatch Spotlight is scheduled for February 2027, when Blizzard plans to reveal more about the game’s future.
The anniversary celebrations extend beyond gameplay.
YOASOBI is scheduled to perform during the Overwatch World Cup, while LE SSERAFIM will return to the Main Stage as the closing act. Blizzard is also presenting QuestWatch, a live Overwatch tabletop RPG one-shot written by Matt Mercer and the Overwatch narrative team.
7. Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm Get Surprising Updates
Hearthstone also received a substantial collection of announcements.
The game’s redesigned Journal will bring quests, achievements and events together in one location, allowing players to track their progress through the history of each expansion.
The next major expansion, Reign of the Black Empire, arrives October 20.
The expansion takes Hearthstone into an ancient period of Azeroth’s history, long before the Old Gods were imprisoned.
It also introduces a new keyword called Assemble. The mechanic allows two cards to merge into a stronger card, potentially creating new combinations and strategies.
Battlegrounds will receive a new minion type called Aberrations on September 22.
Looking further ahead, Hearthstone will introduce the Monk class in March 2027. Blizzard says the Monk will be the game’s first new playable class in six years.
Meanwhile, Heroes of the Storm is receiving a new hero.
Xal’atath will join the Nexus on September 28, with the character becoming playable on the public test realm beginning September 14.
For a game that many fans feared had been left behind, the announcement is notable.
It suggests Blizzard is still willing to invest in the long-running multiplayer title and its community.
Blizzard Is Expanding Beyond Video Games
One of the most interesting announcements at BlizzCon 2026 was not a game at all.
Blizzard confirmed that an animated series set in the world of Diablo is currently in development with Netflix.
Details remain limited, but the announcement demonstrates Blizzard’s continuing interest in taking its franchises beyond interactive entertainment.
Diablo already has an enormous mythology and a recognizable visual identity, making it a natural candidate for an animated adaptation.
The project could introduce Sanctuary and its characters to an audience that may never have played the games.
Blizzard did not provide a release date or extensive details about the series during the opening ceremony, meaning more information will likely arrive at a later date.
What BlizzCon 2026 Means for Blizzard’s Future
The most important aspect of BlizzCon 2026 may be the sheer breadth of the announcements.
Blizzard is not relying on one franchise to carry its future.
StarCraft is returning with a completely different genre. Diablo is preparing for its fifth mainline game while Diablo IV continues receiving major updates. World of Warcraft is expanding in both modern and classic directions.
Overwatch is entering its second decade with new heroes, maps and story content. Hearthstone is preparing another major expansion and its first new class in years.
Even Heroes of the Storm and Warcraft III: Reforged are receiving meaningful attention.
The strategy gives Blizzard multiple ways to maintain player interest across different audiences.
It also creates a busy release calendar.
Diablo IV’s Season of Hell’s Legacy arrives September 15. World of Warcraft: Forever enters beta on September 17. Hearthstone’s Reign of the Black Empire follows in October, while World of Warcraft: Forever launches in November.
Further into the future, Diablo V is scheduled for 2029 and StarCraft’s new open-world shooter is planned for 2030.
A New Era for Blizzard
The opening ceremony showed a company looking both backward and forward.
Classic franchises are being revisited, but Blizzard is not simply reproducing old games. The return of StarCraft in the form of an open-world shooter demonstrates how dramatically the company is willing to reinterpret its established properties.
At the same time, Warcraft III: Reforged is receiving new story content, World of Warcraft is expanding its classic-era concept, and Heroes of the Storm is getting a new character.
That combination of nostalgia and experimentation became one of the defining themes of BlizzCon 2026.
For fans, there is now a long list of dates to remember.
Diablo IV’s anniversary season arrives first. The World of Warcraft: Forever beta follows shortly afterward. Hearthstone continues the schedule in October, and Forever launches in November.
Beyond those releases, Blizzard has given its audience something even more important: a glimpse of what comes next.
StarCraft is coming back.
Diablo V is real.
Warcraft is expanding.
Overwatch is moving into its second decade.
And Blizzard’s classic worlds are once again receiving significant attention.
After years of uncertainty surrounding several of its franchises, BlizzCon 2026 delivered a powerful message about the company’s ambitions.
Blizzard is not simply looking back at its history.
It is attempting to build its next chapter around it.
