Caleb Williams Leaves Bears Game on Cart After Hamstring Injury
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was forced to leave Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings after suffering a right hamstring injury on a fourth-quarter scramble, adding a major concern to a difficult afternoon for Chicago.
Williams was attempting to run toward the left side of the field when his right leg appeared to give way. The injury occurred without contact, and Williams fell to the turf before rolling over in obvious discomfort. Medical personnel quickly came onto the field to assist him.

The second-year quarterback initially tried to get back on his feet but was unable to do so without help. He was taken to the injury tent before being transported to the locker room on a cart.
Williams was visibly frustrated and in pain as he left the field. Before disappearing into the tunnel, however, he acknowledged the crowd at Soldier Field, raising his right fist and giving fans a thumbs-up.
The Bears subsequently confirmed that Williams was dealing with a right hamstring injury. Coach Ben Johnson said the team would have to wait for further evaluation before determining the severity of the problem. Williams was scheduled to undergo imaging Monday.
Injury Comes During Frustrating Loss
The injury occurred with the Bears already struggling offensively against Minnesota.
Chicago ultimately lost 9-3 in a rain-soaked game at Soldier Field. The Bears managed only three points and failed to score a touchdown, a sharp contrast from their explosive season-opening performance.
Minnesota controlled much of the game defensively, while Chicago repeatedly struggled to turn opportunities into points. The Bears entered the fourth quarter trailing 6-3, leaving little room for error.
Williams’ injury came after running back Kyle Monangai converted a fourth-down opportunity near the red zone. Williams then took off on a designed or improvised run toward the left side, appearing to have an open route toward the end zone before his leg gave way.
The Bears were unable to recover offensively after Williams left.
Tyson Bagent Takes Over at Quarterback
With Williams sidelined, Tyson Bagent took over under center for Chicago.
The Bears had opportunities to tie or take the lead but could not finish a scoring drive. Chicago ran two plays inside Minnesota’s 6-yard line but failed to reach the end zone. A 23-yard field-goal attempt by Cairo Santos was subsequently blocked.
Minnesota eventually added another field goal in the fourth quarter to secure the 9-3 victory.
The Vikings improved to 2-0 with the win, while Chicago dropped to 1-1. ESPN’s game data lists Minnesota’s victory as a 9-3 final, with the Vikings scoring all three of their field goals while limiting the Bears to one.
Williams’ Status Becomes Immediate Focus
The Bears’ biggest concern following the game is the extent of Williams’ hamstring injury.
Johnson said his first reaction when Williams went down was concern that the quarterback might have injured his knee. After seeing the nature of the injury, the coach said he was relieved it appeared to involve the hamstring instead, while acknowledging that hamstring injuries can still be significant.
The scheduled imaging was expected to provide the Bears with more information about the injury and potentially establish a clearer timeline for Williams’ return.
At this stage, there was no publicly established timetable for his return.
That uncertainty could become particularly important for Chicago because Williams is central to the team’s offensive plans. Any absence would force the Bears to rely on Bagent while the starting quarterback works through his recovery.
A Difficult Afternoon for Chicago
The injury overshadowed what was already a challenging performance from the Bears.
Chicago’s offense struggled throughout the afternoon as steady rain made conditions difficult for both teams. The Bears could not find the end zone, while Minnesota’s defense consistently prevented Chicago from generating sustained drives.
The Vikings’ final 9-3 victory was their second win of the season. Chicago, meanwhile, went from a 59-point performance in its opener to scoring only three points one week later.
That dramatic offensive swing made Williams’ injury even more significant as the Bears prepare for the next portion of their schedule.
For now, the team’s attention turns to the medical evaluation.
Williams’ ability to return will depend on the severity of the hamstring injury, the results of the imaging and how he responds during rehabilitation. Until those factors are known, the Bears will have to prepare for multiple possibilities at quarterback.
Bears Await Further Updates
Williams’ departure was one of the most concerning moments of Chicago’s loss to Minnesota. Although he was able to acknowledge the home crowd before leaving, he could not continue playing and was ultimately transported to the locker room on a cart.
The Bears now face a short turnaround to determine the quarterback’s condition and establish their plans for the coming week.
For a team that entered the season with expectations surrounding Williams and its offense, the next medical update could have a significant effect on preparations.
The immediate priority, however, is determining the extent of the hamstring injury. The results of Monday’s evaluation should provide the first clearer indication of whether Williams is facing a brief absence or a longer recovery.
Until then, Chicago will move forward with uncertainty at the game’s most important position following a 9-3 loss that already left the Bears searching for answers on offense.
