‘God of War: Sons of Sparta’ Surprise Launches on PS5 as Trilogy Remake Confirmed

PlayStation delivered a major surprise to fans of the long-running action franchise Thursday, announcing not one but two major developments for the God of War universe.

During its latest PlayStation State of Play presentation, Sony revealed that a brand-new title, “God of War: Sons of Sparta,” is now available on the PlayStation 5. At the same time, the company confirmed that a full remake of the original “God of War” trilogy is officially in development.

In a statement shared by Santa Monica Studio, the developer reflected on the franchise’s origins. “Over two decades ago in March 2005, God of War came out on the PlayStation 2 — marking the beginning of Kratos’ incredible journey through ancient Greece and beyond,” the studio wrote, noting that the remake announcement arrives ahead of the series’ 20th anniversary in March 2026.

The remake reveal was delivered by TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos during the Greek saga, adding a nostalgic note to the announcement.

A Return to Kratos’ Youth

The newly launched “Sons of Sparta” offers a different experience from recent cinematic entries. Developed by Mega Cat Studios in collaboration with writers from God of War and God of War Ragnarök, the game is a 2D action platformer set during Kratos’ brutal Spartan upbringing.

The story is described as canon, focusing on Kratos’ harsh training in the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos. Carson reprises his role as the adult Kratos, serving as narrator and tying the prequel tale to the broader mythology of the series.

The dual announcement signals a full-circle moment for the franchise — honoring its Greek-era roots while continuing to expand its narrative legacy on modern hardware.

For longtime fans, it marks both a nostalgic return and a fresh chapter in one of PlayStation’s most iconic sagas.
