SNL Cold Open Turns Trump-Mamdani Meeting Into Natalie Harp Showdown
Saturday Night Live opened its 52nd season by turning a recent meeting between President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani into an exaggerated comedy sketch, with White House aide Natalie Harp becoming one of the cold open’s central characters.
The season premiere, hosted by New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson with musical guest Katseye, brought back James Austin Johnson as Trump and featured guest host Ramy Youssef as Mamdani. The sketch imagined Trump visiting Mamdani during a major storm and portrayed the president as unusually enthusiastic about his relationship with New York’s mayor.
The comedy then took a more surreal turn when Ashley Padilla appeared as Harp, playing the presidential aide as an intensely devoted figure who had followed Trump from Washington to New York.
The premise drew on Harp’s growing visibility around Trump in recent weeks. Her frequent presence near the president has made her a recognizable figure in political and media coverage, giving SNL an opportunity to turn that relationship into a character-driven joke.
Trump and Mamdani Become Unlikely Friends
The cold open began with Mamdani dealing with the effects of a nor’easter in New York City. Trump soon arrived, despite the weather, to see the mayor.
Johnson’s Trump described Mamdani as a close friend and joked about their unlikely relationship. The sketch presented the two politicians as an improbable pair, with Trump repeatedly expressing affection for the mayor.
At one point, Trump compared their relationship to an unlikely friendship between animals. The joke played on the contrast between the two political figures while also referencing their recent public interactions.
Mamdani, meanwhile, appeared increasingly bewildered by Trump’s enthusiasm.
The sketch used the storm outside as a backdrop while Trump focused less on the weather and more on his desire to spend time with the mayor. The exaggerated friendship became the setup for the arrival of another visitor.
That visitor was Harp.
Ashley Padilla Debuts as Natalie Harp
Padilla, who has been promoted to the main SNL repertory cast for the new season, made her debut as Harp in the sketch.
Her entrance immediately shifted the tone. The character appeared soaked from the storm and told Trump that she had traveled from Washington to find him.
Padilla’s Harp explained that she had effectively run from Washington to New York, turning her determination to remain close to Trump into one of the sketch’s main running jokes.
She then sang a portion of Beyoncé’s “Baby Boy” while staring admiringly at Trump.
Johnson’s Trump responded by comparing Harp to the obsessive character from the thriller Obsession, adding another layer to the exaggerated portrayal.
Harp repeatedly insisted that she was completely normal, even as her behavior suggested the opposite. The contradiction became the centerpiece of the character.
The sketch reached its most direct punchline when Harp turned her attention toward Mamdani.
After introducing herself, she delivered a threatening warning: if Mamdani hurt Trump, she would “end” him.
The moment transformed the seemingly friendly Trump-Mamdani meeting into a comic confrontation involving the president’s fiercely protective aide.
The Sketch Returns to Trump and Mamdani
Rather than ending with the threat, the sketch returned to the unusual friendship between Trump and Mamdani.
Trump wanted to remain in New York instead of returning to Washington. Mamdani then used the opportunity to negotiate for funding for a housing project in Queens.
The financial figure became another joke in the sketch, with Trump initially resisting the proposal.
Mamdani eventually offered a much simpler incentive: he would follow Trump on Instagram.
Trump immediately accepted.
The exchange closed the cold open with the two characters joining together for the traditional “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” introduction.
Natalie Harp Becomes a Late-Night Character
The SNL portrayal arrived shortly after Harp had also become the subject of another late-night comedy sketch.
On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, a character based on Harp was portrayed as an unusually devoted assistant who remained close to Kimmel throughout the program. The appearance reflected the increasing attention surrounding Harp and her proximity to Trump.
Harp has worked as a presidential aide and previously appeared in conservative media. Her relationship with Trump has received increased coverage as she has become a visible presence around the president.
That visibility has now made her recognizable enough to become material for late-night comedians, with SNL using her public image as the basis for a deliberately exaggerated character.
SNL Begins Its 52nd Season
The Trump-Mamdani cold open was one of several politically themed moments during the SNL premiere.
The episode marked the beginning of Season 52, with Brunson taking on hosting duties for the first time. The NBA star also appeared throughout the episode in sketches and delivered an opening monologue centered on his career and the New York Knicks.
The new season comes after another record-setting year for the long-running NBC comedy series, which remains one of American television’s most enduring institutions.
For the premiere, however, the cold open focused squarely on current political personalities. By combining Trump’s real-world meeting with Mamdani and the recent attention surrounding Harp, SNL created a fictional scenario that exaggerated those public events for comedy.
Padilla’s introduction as Harp also gives the show a new recurring character to draw upon as the season continues.
The result was a cold open built around three recognizable political figures, an unusual stormy setting and a fictionalized relationship that quickly moved from friendly conversation to an over-the-top warning.
