Apple has officially unveiled the AirPods 5, bringing stronger active noise cancellation, improved sound, smarter features and a more refined open-ear design to its most affordable AirPods lineup. Starting at $129, the new earbuds aim to make advanced audio features more accessible without moving into the higher price range of Apple’s premium models.

The new AirPods 5 were announced September 9, 2026, during Apple’s latest product event. They will be available in stores beginning September 18, while preorders have already opened in the United States and more than 65 other countries and regions.

Apple’s biggest pitch is simple: the AirPods 5 bring active noise cancellation to an open-ear design while improving the way users hear their surroundings.

That combination could make the new earbuds especially attractive to people who want noise reduction without the fully sealed feeling associated with traditional in-ear headphones.

AirPods 5 Bring Stronger Active Noise Cancellation

The headline feature of the AirPods 5 is active noise cancellation, or ANC.

Apple says the new earbuds can remove up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. The company attributes the improvement to a new multiport acoustic architecture combined with improved computational audio algorithms.

That is an important upgrade because open-ear earbuds face a fundamental challenge.

Unlike sealed in-ear earbuds, open-ear AirPods allow some outside sound to reach the listener naturally. That makes them comfortable and convenient for staying aware of traffic, conversations and other surroundings, but it also makes aggressive noise cancellation more difficult.

Apple is attempting to address that compromise with the AirPods 5.

The company describes the new ANC system as industry-leading for an open-ear design. Apple’s product page also describes the new model as offering up to 1.5 times more active noise cancellation than the previous generation.

For commuters, travelers and office workers, that could make the AirPods 5 considerably more versatile than earlier open-ear models.

AirPods 5 Improve Transparency Mode

Noise cancellation is only one side of the equation.

The AirPods 5 also receive an improved Transparency mode designed to make voices and surrounding sounds feel more natural when users need to remain aware of what is happening around them.

This matters because users do not always want complete isolation.

Someone working in a café, walking through a city or waiting at an airport may want music or a podcast while still being able to hear a nearby conversation. Apple’s updated Transparency mode is intended to make that transition more natural.

The earbuds also support Adaptive Audio, which dynamically combines ANC and Transparency mode according to the user’s environment.

Conversation Awareness is another part of the experience. When the wearer starts speaking, the earbuds can reduce media volume so the user can have a conversation without manually changing audio settings.

Together, these features make the AirPods 5 more than a simple upgrade in sound quality. Apple is positioning them as context-aware everyday earbuds.

A New Acoustic Architecture Targets Better Sound

Apple is also introducing a new multiport acoustic architecture with the AirPods 5.

The company says the redesigned acoustic system works with next-generation Adaptive EQ to produce a more immersive listening experience.

Adaptive EQ adjusts the sound based on how the earbuds fit and what the listener is hearing. In practical terms, Apple is trying to deliver more consistent audio without requiring users to manually adjust an equalizer.

That could be particularly useful for an open-ear design, where acoustic performance can be affected by the physical relationship between the earbud and the listener’s ear.

Apple has also retained its H2 chip architecture for the new AirPods generation, according to its product presentation, giving the earbuds a foundation for computational audio and intelligent features.

AirPods 5 Add Siri AI and Live Translation

The AirPods 5 are also part of Apple’s broader push to integrate artificial intelligence into its hardware ecosystem.

Paired with a compatible iPhone, the earbuds can provide hands-free access to Siri AI and Apple’s broader intelligence features. Apple says users can interact with Siri using head gestures, adding another way to respond without touching the phone.

Another major addition is Live Translation.

The feature is designed to help users communicate across languages through a combination of AirPods, iPhone and Apple’s intelligence software.

Apple says Live Translation requires compatible hardware and software, with availability depending on supported languages and regions. Apple’s current product information lists languages including English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish among supported options.

That makes the AirPods 5 potentially more useful for international travelers and multilingual conversations.

However, these AI features are not simply standalone capabilities inside the earbuds. They depend on compatible Apple hardware, operating systems and regional availability.

Two AirPods 5 Models Are Available

Apple is offering the AirPods 5 in two configurations.

The standard model starts at $129 and includes active noise cancellation. That is significant because ANC was previously associated with the more expensive AirPods configuration.

The second model, AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, costs $149. It adds a wireless charging case, longer battery life and on-stem volume controls.

The pricing makes the second model particularly interesting.

For an additional $20, buyers receive several practical upgrades rather than simply a different charging method.

AirPods 5 Get Better Battery Life

Battery life is another area where Apple has made improvements.

The AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case can provide up to five hours of playback with ANC enabled on a single charge. Apple says that is one hour longer than the AirPods 4 with ANC.

With the charging case, total listening time can reach up to 22 hours while using ANC.

The case can be charged through USB-C, Apple Watch chargers and Qi-compatible wireless chargers.

That flexibility should make the higher-priced model more attractive to users who already rely heavily on wireless charging.

On-Stem Volume Control Comes to AirPods 5

Apple is also changing how users control volume.

The AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case introduce volume adjustment through a swipe on the stem. Apple describes this as a first for its open-ear design.

The addition may seem small, but it addresses one of the recurring inconveniences of wireless earbuds.

Previously, users often needed to reach for their phone or rely on voice controls to make precise volume adjustments. A stem-based control provides a more immediate option.

For people who frequently adjust volume while commuting, exercising or working, this could become one of the most useful everyday improvements.

AirPods 5 Keep the Open-Ear Philosophy

Despite the new technology, Apple has not abandoned the basic design philosophy behind its standard AirPods.

The AirPods 5 remain open-ear earbuds rather than adopting the silicone ear tips used by Apple’s AirPods Pro line.

That distinction matters.

Open-ear earbuds generally allow users to remain more aware of their environment and avoid the sealed sensation created by traditional in-ear headphones. At the same time, they typically face limitations when it comes to passive isolation.

The AirPods 5 attempt to overcome part of that limitation through computational audio and improved ANC.

Whether Apple’s approach delivers a meaningful real-world advantage will ultimately depend on independent testing, particularly in environments such as airplanes, busy streets and crowded public transportation.

AirPods 5 Also Improve Durability

Apple says the AirPods 5 offer improved resistance to dust, sweat and water compared with previous models.

That should make them more practical for active users.

The environmental credentials have also received attention. Apple says the new AirPods 5 contain 40 percent recycled material overall, including recycled plastic in the wireless charging case and recycled cobalt in the battery. The company also says the earbuds are manufactured using 35 percent renewable energy across the supply chain.

These changes form part of Apple’s wider environmental strategy, which includes its goal of reaching carbon neutrality across its entire footprint.

AirPods 5 Price and Release Date

The new AirPods 5 are available to preorder at $129 in the United States.

The AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case cost $149.

Both models are scheduled to become available in stores on September 18, 2026. Apple says preorder availability covers the United States and more than 65 additional countries and regions.

For consumers comparing the two models, the extra $20 for the wireless charging version could be worthwhile because it combines several upgrades, including longer ANC battery life and on-stem volume control.

Are AirPods 5 Worth Buying?

The AirPods 5 could become one of Apple’s most important wireless-audio upgrades because they bring several premium-style capabilities to a lower starting price.

At $129, buyers get ANC, improved Transparency mode, Adaptive Audio, upgraded sound architecture and access to Apple’s expanding AI-powered ecosystem.

The $149 version goes further with wireless charging, volume controls and improved battery performance.

The biggest question is whether open-ear ANC can genuinely match the expectations created by Apple’s claims.

Apple’s reported 50 percent improvement over AirPods 4 with ANC is substantial, but real-world performance will vary depending on the environment, fit and listener. Independent reviews will be particularly important for determining how well the AirPods 5 perform against sealed earbuds and Apple’s own AirPods Pro models.

Still, the pricing is notable.

Apple is effectively lowering the entry point for active noise cancellation in its mainstream AirPods family while adding AI-driven features that were once reserved for more expensive hardware.

The Bigger Picture for Apple’s Earbuds

The launch of the AirPods 5 reflects a broader shift in Apple’s wearable strategy.

Wireless earbuds are no longer being marketed simply as accessories for listening to music. Apple increasingly treats them as intelligent computing devices that can interpret the environment, interact with Siri, translate conversations and automatically adjust audio.

The AirPods 5 fit directly into that strategy.

Their combination of open-ear comfort, ANC, adaptive audio and AI features gives Apple another way to differentiate its standard AirPods from competing wireless earbuds.

At the same time, the $129 starting price gives Apple an opportunity to reach consumers who may not want to spend significantly more on premium noise-canceling earbuds.

Final Verdict

The AirPods 5 are a substantial upgrade rather than a minor refresh.

Their strongest selling points are the improved ANC, more natural Transparency mode, upgraded acoustic architecture, Siri AI integration and Live Translation. The $129 starting price also makes the package more compelling, while the $149 wireless-charging model adds practical extras for a relatively small premium.

For users who prefer Apple’s open-ear design but previously considered ANC a reason to move to another product, the AirPods 5 could be especially attractive.

The earbuds are available for preorder now and arrive in stores September 18.
