Motorola Signature 27 Confirmed to Support GrapheneOS, Breaking Pixel-Only Era

Motorola’s upcoming Signature 27 is set to become the first non-Pixel smartphone officially supported by GrapheneOS, marking a significant change for users looking for a privacy-focused Android alternative.

The GrapheneOS project has confirmed that the Motorola Signature 27 will be its initial supported Motorola device. The confirmation ends years of GrapheneOS availability being largely tied to Google’s Pixel hardware and establishes Motorola as the first major smartphone manufacturer outside Google to receive official support for the privacy-focused operating system.

The confirmation follows Motorola’s unveiling of the Signature 27 at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit. Although Motorola and GrapheneOS had previously announced a partnership, neither company had initially identified which Motorola smartphone would receive support.

That question has now been answered.

Motorola Signature 27 Becomes the First Non-Pixel GrapheneOS Phone

GrapheneOS has historically been available only for Google Pixel smartphones. The operating system is based on the Android Open Source Project but adds extensive privacy and security protections, including stronger application isolation and additional controls over how apps interact with sensitive information.

Pixel hardware has traditionally been attractive to GrapheneOS because Google’s devices have provided several of the hardware and software security characteristics required by the project.

Motorola’s Signature 27 changes that situation.

GrapheneOS confirmed in response to a question about the new Motorola flagship that the Signature 27 will be its initial supported phone. The project has not yet provided a complete launch schedule for the operating system on the device, however.

This means the announcement should not be interpreted as confirmation that users can install GrapheneOS on the Signature 27 immediately. Official builds, installation instructions and additional availability information are still expected.

Why the Signature 27 Qualifies

One of the major reasons the Signature 27 is suitable for GrapheneOS is its high-end hardware platform.

Motorola has confirmed that the smartphone uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 Mobile Platform. The company also says the Signature 27 will receive seven years of operating-system upgrades and up to seven years of security updates, subject to market, carrier and model variations.

Long-term software support is particularly important for GrapheneOS because the project requires compatible devices to maintain security over an extended period.

GrapheneOS has also identified hardware security capabilities as an important part of its requirements for Motorola devices. Reports surrounding the Signature 27 point to features including hardware memory tagging and strong secure-element integration as factors that make the new flagship suitable for the project.

The combination of modern Qualcomm hardware and Motorola’s longer software-support commitment therefore provides the foundation for the new partnership.

A High-End Motorola With a Privacy-Focused Operating System

The Signature 27 is positioned as Motorola’s premium flagship rather than an inexpensive device.

Motorola says the phone features a new thermal-management system, a next-generation Snapdragon platform, advanced camera hardware and a redesigned premium exterior. The company has also confirmed a 50-megapixel Sony LYTIA 910 main camera and a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera.

The smartphone is also Motorola’s first model to feature Audio by Bang & Olufsen following the companies’ newly announced partnership.

That hardware combination makes the Signature 27 particularly interesting for privacy-conscious users who previously had to choose from Google’s Pixel lineup when looking for an officially supported GrapheneOS phone.

GrapheneOS May Not Be Pre-Installed at Launch

One important detail remains unresolved: whether the Motorola Signature 27 will ship with GrapheneOS already installed.

GrapheneOS has previously indicated that devices sold with the operating system pre-installed are planned, but the exact details still need to be finalized. The project’s confirmation of the Signature 27 does not itself establish that every Signature 27 will ship with GrapheneOS.

For now, users should distinguish between official GrapheneOS support and GrapheneOS being installed at the factory.

The first means the project is officially supporting the hardware. The second would mean Motorola or an authorized sales channel ships the device with GrapheneOS from the beginning.

The Signature 27 is not expected to be the end of Motorola’s GrapheneOS partnership.

Earlier announcements indicated that additional Motorola smartphones would eventually receive support. Future versions of the Razr Fold and Razr Ultra have also been identified as devices that will receive GrapheneOS support.

That could give privacy-focused Android users more choices beyond traditional Pixel hardware.

When Will the Motorola Signature 27 Be Available?

Motorola currently says the Signature 27 is expected to reach markets worldwide during 2026, with additional availability details to come later. The company has already confirmed the device’s North American arrival, although a specific retail launch date has not yet been announced.

The exact timing for GrapheneOS support is similarly unclear.

For prospective buyers, that means the Signature 27’s hardware specifications and official GrapheneOS compatibility are confirmed, but important details about installation, availability and factory-installed versions remain outstanding.
