Moussa Kamissoko Commits to Syracuse as Gerry McNamara Lands Five-Star Recruit

Syracuse has landed one of the biggest commitments of its new era.

Five-star forward Moussa Kamissoko has committed to the Orange, giving first-year head coach Gerry McNamara a major recruiting victory and a highly regarded piece for Syracuse’s 2027 class. Kamissoko confirmed his decision to ESPN on Friday, Sept. 25.

The 6-foot-7 forward is regarded as one of the top prospects in the country for the 2027 recruiting cycle. The 247Sports Composite lists Kamissoko as the No. 14 overall player and No. 5 small forward in the class, while other recruiting services have placed him even higher nationally.

For Syracuse, the commitment represents an important early step for McNamara as he begins reshaping the program.

Syracuse Wins a Competitive Recruiting Battle

Kamissoko’s recruitment attracted significant attention from programs across the country.

The New York native took official visits to several major programs, including Illinois, BYU, Florida State, Virginia and Oklahoma State. Alabama, NC State, Penn State and Providence were also among the schools pursuing him. He had additional visits planned, including trips involving Baylor and Louisville, before ultimately making his decision for Syracuse.

Syracuse had been involved with Kamissoko for an extended period. The Orange offered him a scholarship in December 2024, before McNamara and his staff continued the relationship after McNamara took over the program.

That persistence ultimately paid off.

Kamissoko also made an official visit to Syracuse in early September. On3’s recruiting database lists that visit for Sept. 3, when Kamissoko was still weighing a wide range of national options.

The decision also carries a personal element. Kamissoko is from the Bronx and has developed much of his basketball career in New York, including a previous stint at Long Island Lutheran. His familiarity with the region made Syracuse a natural option as he considered where to continue his career.

A Highly Rated Forward With Versatility

Kamissoko’s appeal comes from more than his recruiting ranking.

The long, athletic forward has developed a reputation as a versatile offensive player capable of contributing in several areas. During the 2026 Nike EYBL circuit with the PSA Cardinals, he averaged 16.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 51.2% from the field and 35.3% from three-point range, according to Sports Illustrated’s Syracuse coverage.

His size and mobility allow him to operate around the perimeter while also attacking the basket. That combination has helped establish Kamissoko as one of the more intriguing forwards in his recruiting class.

He has also received national-level attention outside the high school recruiting circuit. Kamissoko was part of the USA Basketball U18 training camp in 2026, another indication of the level of attention surrounding his development.

At SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio, Kamissoko has continued developing his game after previously playing at Long Island Lutheran. His experience in competitive national basketball environments has given him opportunities to face some of the country’s strongest young players.

McNamara Gets His First Five-Star Recruit

The commitment is particularly significant for McNamara.

The former Syracuse standout was hired as the program’s new head coach after leading Siena and returning to the school where he helped win a national championship as a player alongside Carmelo Anthony. His appointment came with the challenge of rebuilding a Syracuse program that has missed the NCAA Tournament in recent seasons.

Kamissoko becomes McNamara’s first five-star commitment at Syracuse. He is also the first five-star prospect to choose the Orange since Donnie Freeman committed in 2024, according to ESPN.

That makes the pledge an important recruiting statement as McNamara attempts to establish his own identity at Syracuse.

The Orange finished the 2025-26 season 15-17 overall and 6-12 in ACC play, according to Field Level Media. The program’s next objective is to build a roster capable of competing at the highest level of the conference while restoring its place on the national stage.

Kamissoko Joins Syracuse’s 2027 Class

Kamissoko is the second player committed to Syracuse in the 2027 recruiting class.

He joins Jack Donohue, a 6-foot-8 forward from The Newman School in Boston who committed to the Orange in August.

Adding Kamissoko gives Syracuse a significant foundation for the class and provides McNamara with an elite talent around whom he can continue building.

The Orange are expected to remain active on the recruiting trail, with several highly regarded prospects still being evaluated by the new coaching staff.

For Kamissoko, meanwhile, the decision ends a recruitment that included numerous high-profile programs and months of visits and conversations.

For Syracuse, it marks something larger.

The Orange have secured one of the most prominent recruits in the 2027 class, and McNamara now has a five-star prospect at the center of his first major recruiting class.
