Brazil Supreme Court Unseals Investigation Into Bolsonaro Biopic Funding

Brazil’s Supreme Court has unsealed an investigation into the financing of a biopic about former President Jair Bolsonaro, bringing a controversial film project into the center of the country’s widening political and financial scandal surrounding Banco Master.

The investigation involves Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president’s son and a candidate in Brazil’s upcoming presidential election. Authorities are examining allegations surrounding money used to finance “Dark Horse,” a film portraying the life and political career of Jair Bolsonaro.

The case has added another layer to an increasingly complicated investigation into the failed Banco Master and its former owner, Daniel Vorcaro. Brazilian authorities have been examining allegations of financial fraud, corruption and money laundering connected to the bank and people associated with it.

Investigation focuses on film financing

The investigation into the movie was authorized by Supreme Court Justice André Mendonça after a request from federal police. Documents made public this week confirmed that Flávio Bolsonaro has been under investigation since July.

Authorities are examining whether money connected to Vorcaro was used in the production of “Dark Horse” and whether the financing involved potential crimes including money laundering, illegal movement of currency and corruption.

The investigation does not establish that Flávio Bolsonaro committed a crime. The allegations remain under examination, and the senator has denied wrongdoing.

Flávio Bolsonaro has acknowledged seeking private financing for the movie about his father. He has argued that there was nothing improper about asking a private businessman to support a privately produced film.

The senator has also rejected suggestions that the financing represented an illegal benefit.

Millions linked to Banco Master

The investigation gained wider attention after reports revealed that Vorcaro provided millions of dollars connected to the production of the Bolsonaro film.

Brazilian authorities are examining a transfer worth tens of millions of Brazilian reais. The money was reportedly connected to arrangements involving the production and related financial structures.

The scale of the funding has attracted particular scrutiny because Banco Master collapsed amid allegations of a major financial fraud scheme. Vorcaro, the bank’s former owner, has become a central figure in the investigation.

The connection between Vorcaro and the Bolsonaro family has also become politically sensitive because Flávio Bolsonaro is campaigning for the presidency.

The investigation therefore comes at a critical moment, with the Banco Master case threatening to become an important issue in Brazil’s election campaign.

‘Dark Horse’ draws political attention

“Dark Horse” was developed as a biographical film about Jair Bolsonaro, covering significant moments in his political career and his rise to the presidency.

The project has attracted attention partly because of its political subject and partly because of the people involved in its production.

Actor and former Bolsonaro government official Mário Frias has been associated with the project. The film is directed by Cyrus Nowrasteh, while actor Jim Caviezel has been cast as Bolsonaro.

The production has faced questions about its financing and the use of funds connected to organizations associated with people involved in the project.

Federal police have separately investigated whether public money and parliamentary amendments were improperly connected to the movie’s production.

Those investigations have widened the controversy surrounding the film and created additional political pressure on Bolsonaro allies.

Banco Master scandal deepens

The movie investigation is only one part of a much larger scandal.

Banco Master has become the focus of a sprawling investigation involving alleged financial wrongdoing and possible connections between the bank’s former leadership, politicians and influential figures.

The scandal has also created tensions inside Brazil’s Supreme Court.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes, one of the country’s most prominent judicial figures, has faced scrutiny because of alleged contacts with Vorcaro. Moraes was previously responsible for major cases involving Jair Bolsonaro and ultimately played a central role in proceedings against the former president.

The allegations involving the justice have been disputed, and scrutiny of his relationship with Vorcaro has become part of a broader political confrontation surrounding the court.

At the same time, different Supreme Court justices have disagreed publicly over how investigations connected to Banco Master should be handled.

Political consequences for Flávio Bolsonaro

The investigation presents an additional challenge for Flávio Bolsonaro as he campaigns for the presidency.

His political opponents are likely to use the case to question his relationship with Vorcaro and the source of funding for the Bolsonaro biopic.

Flávio Bolsonaro, however, has maintained that the film was a private project and that seeking private investment for it was legitimate.

He has also accused political opponents and members of the judiciary of using the investigation to interfere with the election.

The dispute reflects the intense political divisions that have characterized Brazil since Jair Bolsonaro left office.

The former president remains a powerful figure among conservative voters despite his legal troubles and conviction over an alleged attempt to undermine Brazil’s democratic institutions.

Transparency becomes central issue

The decision to make parts of the investigation public followed growing pressure for greater transparency surrounding the Banco Master case.

Justice Edson Fachin, president of Brazil’s Supreme Court, requested that investigative documents be made public except for material whose secrecy remained necessary for ongoing investigative measures.

Mendonça initially released some information while keeping other portions confidential. That decision prompted criticism from fellow justices and prosecutors, who argued that the public needed broader access to the material.

Additional documents were subsequently released, including information confirming the existence of the investigation involving Flávio Bolsonaro and the “Dark Horse” financing.

The dispute over the documents has highlighted tensions within Brazil’s highest court at a politically sensitive time.

A case with wider implications

The investigation into “Dark Horse” is now closely connected to several of Brazil’s biggest political and financial controversies.

What began as questions surrounding the financing of a movie about a former president has expanded into a broader examination of private money, political relationships and alleged financial crimes.

For Flávio Bolsonaro, the investigation arrives as he seeks national office and attempts to build on his family’s political base.

For Brazil’s Supreme Court, the case adds to mounting pressure over its handling of the Banco Master scandal.

And for investigators, the central task remains determining whether the money used to finance the film was obtained and transferred legally.

Until those questions are answered, the Bolsonaro biopic will remain more than a political movie. It has become one of the latest pieces of a much larger investigation that is testing Brazil’s political institutions, financial system and judicial system at the same time.
