GTA 6 Looks Worse? Ned Luke Fires Back at Critics

The claim that GTA 6 looks worse than GTA 5 has sparked a fresh debate among Grand Theft Auto fans, but Ned Luke, the actor behind Michael De Santa, is having none of it. Following Rockstar Games’ latest extended gameplay presentation, Luke dismissed comparisons suggesting that the upcoming game looks too similar to its predecessor.

The discussion comes after Rockstar released a lengthy Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look on August 27. The presentation showed more of Vice City, its characters, gameplay systems and animation work than fans had previously seen. Rockstar says the footage was captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5 and represents the biggest evolution of the series yet. RRockstar Games

While much of the response has been overwhelmingly positive, social media discussions have also produced criticism. Some players have argued that GTA VI does not look sufficiently different from GTA V, while others have gone further and claimed that certain elements of the older game look better.

Luke strongly disagrees.

GTA 6 Looks Worse? Ned Luke Says Fans Are Wrong

Luke, who portrayed Michael De Santa in GTA V, recently discussed the comparison during an appearance involving Partychat and House of Highlights.

His reaction was blunt. Luke argued that GTA VI looks fundamentally different from GTA V and pointed directly toward the game’s new protagonist, Jason Duval, as an example.

He also highlighted the technological progress made since GTA V was released in 2013.

According to Luke, the advancement in technology should make it obvious that a new Rockstar title is capable of surpassing its predecessor. He compared the situation with the transition from GTA IV to GTA V, noting that the visual leap between those games was substantial.

That comparison is important.

GTA V originally launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 before later arriving on newer platforms. GTA VI, meanwhile, has been built for current-generation consoles and is officially scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s official website currently lists November 19, 2026, as the game’s release date. RRockstar Games

The hardware difference alone makes a direct visual comparison complicated.

GTA 6 Graphics Go Beyond Resolution

The argument over whether GTA 6 looks worse is also missing an important part of modern game graphics.

Visual quality is not simply about sharper textures or higher resolution.

Modern games rely heavily on animation, lighting, reflections, character deformation, environmental density and how objects behave within the world. These systems can make a game feel substantially more realistic even when individual screenshots do not immediately reveal the difference.

That is one area where GTA VI appears to be making significant progress.

The extended gameplay footage showed more natural-looking character movement, detailed environments and a highly populated version of Vice City. The presentation also demonstrated a broad range of activities and interactions involving Jason, Lucia and the surrounding world.

Independent coverage of the showcase has similarly emphasized the game’s visual detail and technical ambition. The Verge described the footage as demonstrating major advancements in graphics and gameplay, while Wired highlighted improvements involving characters, environments, NPC behavior and gameplay systems. TThe Verge+1

That makes the idea that the entire game looks worse than GTA V difficult to sustain.

Why Some Fans Think GTA 6 Looks Like GTA 5

There is, however, a reason the debate exists.

GTA VI is still unmistakably a Grand Theft Auto game.

It has the same broad design philosophy that made GTA V successful: an open-world environment, exaggerated characters, satirical storytelling, vehicles, crime and a mixture of realistic and stylized visual elements.

Because GTA V has been updated repeatedly over the years, many players are also familiar with its later-generation versions. GTA V on modern hardware can look dramatically better than the original 2013 release.

That creates an unusual comparison.

Players are not necessarily comparing the original PS3 version of GTA V with GTA VI. Instead, many are comparing a heavily refined GTA V experience running on newer hardware with footage from an unfinished or pre-release GTA VI build.

That can make the difference appear smaller than it actually is.

There is also the question of artistic preference.

A player can genuinely prefer the color grading, character designs or overall atmosphere of GTA V without believing that GTA VI is technically inferior. Those are two different arguments.

GTA 6 Looks Worse? Small Animation Problems Became a Big Debate

Some of the criticism surrounding the latest footage has focused on very specific animation moments.

Fans have paused the footage to analyze individual movements. Among the examples discussed online are an awkward-looking backflip animation and a moment where a character’s hand appears not to make perfect contact with a vehicle door.

Other debates have focused on weapon animations and character interactions.

These criticisms are worth separating from the broader claim that GTA VI looks worse.

A single animation can look strange even inside an exceptionally detailed game. In fact, the more realistic a game attempts to be, the more noticeable small imperfections can become.

Rockstar has spent years building a reputation for densely detailed open worlds. Players therefore expect an extraordinary level of polish.

When a game is designed to simulate hundreds of small interactions, people will naturally inspect those interactions frame by frame.

That does not necessarily mean the underlying technology is inferior.

GTA 6 Character Animation May Be One of Its Biggest Upgrades

Luke’s comments about character movement may actually be one of the more interesting parts of the debate.

Characters in GTA V were impressive when the game launched, but animation technology has changed significantly since then.

GTA VI’s characters appear to use more nuanced movement systems. Their bodies respond differently to surfaces, objects and situations, while transitions between movements can appear more fluid.

This is especially important for Jason and Lucia.

Rockstar’s official material presents the pair as central to the game’s story, with their relationship playing a major role in the criminal journey through Leonida. Jason has a background involving the Army and work with local drug runners, while Lucia has recently left prison and is determined to change her circumstances. RRockstar Games+1

The characters therefore need to feel convincing not only during cinematic scenes but also while walking, driving, fighting and interacting with the environment.

That is a much larger technical challenge than simply making character models more detailed.

Rockstar’s GTA 6 Extended Look Changed the Conversation

Before the extended presentation, fans had seen relatively limited official gameplay footage.

That changed on August 27.

Rockstar’s showcase provided a much broader look at the game and confirmed that the footage was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. The company described it as an evolution of the series, while its official website continues to promote Vice City and the wider Leonida setting as the heart of the experience. RRockstar Games+1

The presentation also gave fans a better look at Jason and Lucia’s interactions.

That matters because GTA VI is not simply attempting to reproduce GTA V with higher-resolution assets. Rockstar appears to be expanding the simulation itself.

The world is intended to feel more dynamic.

Characters have more detailed behaviors. Environments are denser. Activities are more varied. The protagonists can interact with each other and the world in more complex ways.

Those changes may ultimately matter more than whether one particular screenshot looks marginally better than a screenshot from GTA V.

GTA 6 vs GTA 5 Is Not Really a Fair Graphics Test

There is another problem with the comparison: games are not static images.

GTA V has had years of optimization, updates and re-releases. Players have also become experts at finding the best-looking locations, lighting conditions and camera angles.

GTA VI is being judged almost entirely from curated footage.

That means fans are examining a handful of scenes and trying to extrapolate the visual quality of an enormous open world.

It is possible for GTA VI to have occasional weak animations while still representing a huge technical advancement overall.

The same principle applies to GTA V.

Its strengths do not disappear simply because a sequel has better technology.

GTA 6 Release Date Remains November 19, 2026

For fans still waiting to experience the game for themselves, Rockstar currently lists November 19, 2026, as the release date for GTA VI.

The game is officially listed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Rockstar identifying PlayStation 5 as the platform on which it plays best. RRockstar Games+1

That means the current discussion is still based on pre-release material.

The final version could contain additional improvements, changes or optimizations before launch.

Rockstar’s latest presentation was already substantial, but it is unlikely to reveal every detail of the finished game. The company’s official GTA VI media page currently lists dozens of screenshots, videos and pieces of artwork, suggesting that there is still plenty of promotional material available for the final stretch toward launch. RRockstar Games

Ned Luke’s GTA 6 Defense Makes Sense

Ultimately, the debate over whether GTA 6 looks worse comes down to what fans mean by “looks better.”

If someone prefers GTA V’s art direction, color palette or character designs, that is a subjective opinion.

But if the claim is that GTA VI is broadly less technologically advanced than GTA V, the available evidence does not support it.

Rockstar’s new game is being built for newer hardware and includes substantially more advanced character animation, environmental detail and simulation systems. The latest gameplay footage has also been widely praised for its technical ambition. TThe Verge+1

Luke’s response therefore reflects a fairly straightforward argument: the sequel has had more than a decade of technological development behind it.

GTA V changed what players expected from an open-world game when it launched.

GTA VI now has the difficult job of doing the same thing again.

Whether it succeeds will ultimately depend on the complete game rather than a 26-minute showcase. But based on what Rockstar has shown so far, calling GTA VI visually inferior to GTA V appears to be a much stronger claim than the evidence can currently support.

For now, the most reasonable conclusion is simple: GTA 6 does not need to be perfect in every animation to represent a major visual and technological leap over GTA 5.

And with the release date set for November 19, 2026, players will eventually get the chance to make that comparison for themselves.
